Safety Challenges for California Bikers

Posted on

The 365-day sunny weather in California makes it ideally suited for biking year round. Urban bike commuting has become particularly popular. Yet the road can be a very dangerous place for bikers and along with the upward trend in biking riding has come a dramatic rise in cyclist fatalities. In California alone, 338 cyclists were killed due to collisions with motor vehicles, more than anywhere else in the nation.

Take Protective Measures

Bike accidents often occur when motorists are unable to see the cyclist. While drivers need to be more aware, it is also the responsibility of cyclists to take protective measures. All cyclists should make sure they take the following protective measures to prevent accidents:

  • Wear a Helmet: All minors are required to wear helmets that meet minimum accepted standards. Although it is not mandatory, Adults should also wear helmets as a precaution.
  • Ride with Traffic: Cyclists have the right to share the road but must ride with traffic on the right side of the road. They should use signals and follow traffic laws.
  • Use Only One Earplug: While you may enjoy turning up the music and tuning out, it can be distracting. To remain alert, refrain from using earplugs or headsets that cover both ears.
  • Use Lights and Reflective Clothing: Just as cars must turn on their lights in low light conditions so should cyclists. A white headlight and reflectors are required by law in California when riding in the dark.
  • Do Not Ride Under the Influence: If caught riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you will be cited.
  • Before heading out on the road, cyclists should double-check their safety equipment. Check to make sure your brakes, chains, gears, and all other components are working correctly and have the bike correctly adjusted for your size.

Follow California Bicycle Laws

To stay safe on the road, all California cyclists should be sure to follow California bicycle laws. Bikers should avoid riding on the sidewalk and ride on the road, with traffic and making sure to follow all traffic regulations. Use the bike lane when possible and be careful to avoid the door zone of cars parked on the side of the road.
