The attorneys at The Sargent Firm Injury Lawyers are dedicated to help you receive the fair compensation you are entitled to if you are involved in a motorcycle driver. Defensive driving is important for all drivers, but especially to motorcycle drivers. There are certain things motorcycle drivers can do to reduce their risk of being in an accident.

Motorcycle Safety Courses

Courses are available for both new and experienced drivers. In California, motorcycle drivers under the age of 21 are required to take the Motorcycle Training Course. It is recommended that drivers over the age of 21, and therefore not required, still enroll in the course to be best prepared for driving. The course only takes 15 hours. 10 hours are driving and five in a classroom. Other drivers attitudes about motorcycle drivers often shift most of the responsibility to the motorcycle driver to be overly cautious and defensive.

Defensive Driving Techniques

If you choose not to, or just need a refresher on defensive driving techniques, there are a few techniques that can be implemented in everyday driving:\

  • Know the site of most collisions. Intersections pose the biggest risk of crash to motorcycle drivers. The most common accident is a driver turning left in front of a vehicle. Taking extra precaution at intersections might just save your life.
  • Be aware of driver’s blind spots. Motorcycles are obviously smaller than the average automobile. Therefore, it makes it even more likely that a driver might not see a motorcycle in their blind spot. Motorcycle drivers must be aware of their surroundings and pay close attention to the movement of the automobiles, especially if there is potential to be in their blind spot.
  • Keep yourself visible. Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, it is best to keep lights on, regardless if you are driving in the day or at night. Always drive with the idea that the other driver cannot see you so that you are always driving defensively.
  • Wear the proper gear. In California, a motorcycle driver, and rider, must always be wearing a helmet. Your helmet should meet the Department of Transportation requirements. In addition to a helmet, a rider should be wearing the proper protective clothing garments. It is best to wear gear that covers as much of your body as possible and is made with padding to protect you in the event of a crash.
  • Pay attention to weather conditions. Driving in perfect conditions can be dangerous on a motorcycle, let alone when it is wet or icy. Pay attention to local weather if you want to ride your motorcycle and avoid driving in less than ideal conditions.
